Materials: bronzed resin, marble base
David by Donatello
From: €30,00
Small-scale reproduction of the famous David di Donatello, symbol of the civic virtues of the Republic of Florence. Product in bronzed resin with marble base, made in Tuscany and finished by hand.
The original statue is now housed inside the Museo Nazionale del Bargello
Made around 1440, probably commissioned by Cosimo the Elder as an ornament for the courtyard of Palazzo Medici Riccardi, Donatello’s David is believed to have been the first nude sculpture produced since the days of Imperial Rome. With the expulsion of the Medici in 1495 and the ensuing re-foundation of the Florentine Republic, the statue was placed in the seat of government, Palazzo Vecchio, as a symbol of the republican victory. The soft, long hair, the details of the headdress, the ornate shoes, the garland on which the figure rests and the head of the giant Goliath testify to Donatello’s mastery.
