La Biennale di Venezia
The history
Founded as a cultural society in 1895 with the organisation of the first Art Exhibition in the world, in order to stimulate artistic activity and the art market in the city of Venice and the unified Italian state, the Venice Biennale still aims to promote new artistic trends and organises international events in contemporary arts.
The initiative was started by a group of Venetian intellectuals led by the mayor of the time, Riccardo Selvatico, who, with a resolution of the Venice City Council of 19 April 1893, proposed to ‘establish a national art biennial exhibition’. Over the years, the multidisciplinary nature of the Biennale grew and today it organises in all its Sectors – Art (1895), Architecture (1980), Cinema (1932), Dance (1999), Theatre (1934), Music (1930) – exhibition, performance, research and training activities.
