An outstanding talent combined with a terrible temperament: Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio (Milan 1571 – Porto Ercole, Grosseto, 1610), spent his brief existence amidst brawls and run-ins with the law, protected by wealthy patrons, but did not escape a tragic end. Nevertheless, he left an indelible mark on Italian and European Baroque painting, making use of the contrast between light and shadow to convey the full force of reality on the canvas.
