Marzocco – Lion of Florence
From: €16,00
Reproduction in painted white resin of the lion Marzocco, famous work of Donatello, symbol of the popular power of the Florentine Republic and of Florence, formerly located in Piazza della Signoria.
Product in white resin, hand painted, made in Tuscany and finished by hand.
The original statue is now housed in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello.
Sculpted between 1419 and 1420 by Donatello, the Marzocco is one of the totemic symbols of the city of Florence. The choice of this animal as protector of the city can be traced back to the early Republican period. The lion is linked in the Bible to the tribe of Judah and the dynasty of King David, both references dear to the hearts of Florentines at the time. In Donatello’s version, the Marzocco stands as the guardian of the city, bearing the coat of arms with the Lily of Florence.
