Artemisia Lomi Gentileschi (Rome 1593 – Naples 1654). Artemisia was a highly gifted artist with a strong personality, one of the first women to assert herself in a largely male-dominated world. She worked in Genoa, Florence, Venice, Rome, Naples and England. Her tragic and adventure-filled life has also been the subject of novels and films. The daughter of an artist, she worked in her father’s studio and mixed in late Mannerist, and then Caravaggesque, circles. Her life was scarred by the violence she suffered at the age of eighteen from another painter in her father’s workshop, Agostino Tassi, and the long trial that ensued. After leaving Rome, she attained artistic maturity and success.
